DNF at 67%
This is not a post apocalypse book, or at least 67% of the book isn’t. This is a running-from-a-bad-guy-while-surviving-outdoors-in-the-winter-without-electronics story. Didn’t love.
3 stars. This was fine. I didn’t love it like the majority of people and that happens from time to time.
I wanted more from this. More action, more world building, more character development, more nightmare, more information on the magical system. Idk, just *more.*

This can’t be how this series ended — I .. don’t even know what to say.. this easily could’ve been a 4.5 rated up for me, but this was emotional robbery and ended terribly
DNF at 25% — listened to the unabridged version. I couldn’t get into the interview format for storytelling. This format seemed to do away with any character development or really characters at all.. maybe it gets better later on, but I’ve tried with this book 3 times and it took rewinding so many times to just get to 25% bc I kept zoning out. I feel relief letting this one go

I didn’t love The Folk of the Air series, so I was surprised by how much I ended up enjoying Book of Night. It starts slow, but picks up around the 60% mark and finishes strong imo.
This one leans into darker, more adult themes—transactional/conditional relationships, messy family dynamics, and the tension between guilt and resentment that comes with facing childhood trauma as an adult grappling with how to forgive while also wanting to be forgiven. Gritty, introspective, and more emotionally layered than I expected. I think it was ultimately a rewarding read once it finds its footing. Worth sticking with. And the ending? Perfect setup for the next book!
