Loved this! It was a snappy little read! Adore Weike Wangs writing.
I honestly wasn’t expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did. I knew of Jojo Moyes, but had never really felt drawn to pick up one of her books because I assumed they’d be a bit fluffy, the kind of novel that spends three chapters describing someone walking through a front door. **yawn**
But this completely surprised me. The story moved along at a really good pace and never felt overly descriptive or cheesy. It was engaging, easy to read, and had much more heart than I expected.
I’ll definitely be reading more of this author’s work now.
I’m sure this is a beautiful story, but I ended up struggling with the heavy mathematical focus. I’m hopeless at maths, and my mind would completely blank during the equation-related parts, which made it hard for me to stay engaged with the story.
I can definitely see the appeal, though, and I think readers who enjoy mathematics or more intellectual themes would probably get much more out of it
I liked it enough to finish it although I had to really concentrate as the story switched between the 3 sisters.
It was an ok read. I’m not very familiar with the world of academia, so I had to look up a few terms along the way to fully grasp parts of the story. I found it quite slow to start and struggled to get into it, but it improved and held my attention more in the second half.
It was a joy to read this book. Deep and the prose flowed so beautifully
Was good to begin with but fell flat half way through. Could have done with a little less back & forth between Beatrix & Fred. Not one for me but could be someone else’s ideal read.
I really liked this, even though I can’t fully explain why. It’s not plot-heavy or dramatic, it just quietly follows a couple over a few years and the dynamics in their lives.
I especially liked the glimpse into a Chinese immigrant family. It felt very natural and understated, just observing rather than trying to make everything a big moment.
Sometimes a book doesn’t need a huge storyline to work and this one just did for me.
DNF — not a good fit for me, too much swearing and explicit content for my taste.
