The ostensibly silly premise makes a solid backdrop for various unconnected slices of life that manage to be very impactful despite small amounts of time devoted to each individual story.

The story line is abrupt with no background, it could be flushed out a lot better. I still loved it because it's firefly, but if it wasn't I probably wouldn't have given this 2 stars let alone 3.

Definitely a little more vulgar than it needs to be, but still a great premise and a great story. Definitely looking forward to what happens next. Also one of the main characters is Simon Pegg so that's pretty cool.

This would make a better beginning to Patient Zero but as a standalone story published after that novel it really adds very little, as most of the content is word for word the opening chapter of Patient Zero.

Such a better story line than the first volume. With such a potentially interesting premise it was a shame in the first volume to get a run of the mill plot. Here however the premise is used to it's full advantage.

I only managed to finish this because I love the show/characters so much. It loses a lot of the punch of the on screen Veronica Mars and is mostly just a passable mystery.

Reads like a perfect turn of the (19th) century early science fiction . Easy to see the comparison to Wells or Verne.

The story is deliberately confusing where it doesn't need to be. The magic system is decent but Weeks is no where near as good at getting the details in early and in an interesting way like Sanderson for instance. The history behind the plot is hidden but not in any way that furthers tension or throws in twists. Weeks just simply doesn't explain anything till he feels like it, most of the necessary historical details don't even come in till the second book.

The only reason I enjoyed these books at all was because Kip is such a likable character. Fantasy tropes, passable writing, but a very solid main character.

The first book in the series was good. A solid fantasy novel but without anything particularly original. In the second book Wexler comes into his own. Instead of sticking to the classic fantasy plots this entire book is about politics, and occasionally finance, yet I still had as much fun as any fantasy book filled with great wars and dragons. Finally a refreshing original fantasy series and I can't wait for the next one.
