Book exposed very little that wasn't already known to the public. Author provides details about events that appeared in the news in greater detail than the papers did, but it still felt empty to me.

Every once in a while you read a book, as a writer, that fills you with hope and a tinge of shame.

Robbins is by no means a typical author, he waxes poetically about details of an object or person that could be said in one or two sentences, as opposed to entire paragraphs. But this very trait gives his writing endurance - stays with the reader long after they've finished the book.

I found his take on the idea of victims of privilege to be interesting and the emphatic way in which he warmly but at times also rather coldly writes about the nature of love.

If you're looking for something with colorful, vibrant language that avoids the common pitfall of being verbose then I highly suggest that you read this book.

Fascinating book about an amazing man, a man that we owe much of modern medicines more humane practices to.

At times it felt as if information from previous chapters, or even recent sentences was rehashed unnecessarily.

The author does an excellent job of describing Dr. Mütter's contributions to medicine, his seemingly unrivaled kindness, and at his core who he was i.e., a complicated man.

However, if you enjoy history, medicine, or the slightly macabre/bizarre then this book is for you!
