Elegant, dark, and ethereal. One of the best short story collections I've ever read. Each story was lush and beautiful, if bleak, which is a rarity.
This book hits all the good spots. It's one of my favorites: friendships between high school girls that are realistic, supernatural horror, actually scary.
Michael McDowell never wrote a bad book. They are all—hand to God—perfect. The Elementals is your doorway to joy. Read the Dark Water series next and bless my name every time you think back on what a great read it was.
I wish all of Bennett's books could be this good. Sadly, he went the way of sci-fi, so we all lose.
Dan Simmons can ramble in a way that makes you regret starting the book. He needs an editor with moxie that can tell him to cut it (so does Stephen King). If you feel the same, then welcome to this book because it's a treat that's super scary, well written, and just the right length.

Elizabeth Hand writes two types of books: Perfect and excellent. This one is excellent. For comparison purposes, Black Light is perfect.

This is hands down the scariest book I've ever read. A true horror book, benchmark of the genre--Nevill's piece de resistance. I measure all horror books by this one now, which is good and bad. Few measure up.
