Who Would Like This Book:

If you love immersive historical fiction with strong female leads, page-turning espionage, and a dash of romance, this book is for you! The setting - 1930s-40s Spain and Morocco - is both unique and richly detailed, transporting readers to places and parts of WWII history not often covered in fiction. Sira’s transformation from humble seamstress to daring spy is captivating, and the cast of vibrant supporting characters keeps the story lively. Anyone who enjoys epic tales of resilience, reinvention, and intrigue will likely find themselves hooked.

Who May Not Like This Book:

Readers looking for fast-paced action right from page one may feel frustrated, as the story starts slowly and devotes significant time to setup and character development. If you prefer concise novels - this one clocks in at over 600 pages - you might be turned off by the lengthy descriptions and historical details. Some may also dislike the protagonist’s flawed early decision-making or find the narrative style a touch distant and heavy on 'telling' rather than 'showing.' If you want a tightly plotted thriller without much patience for slower character arcs or are not interested in historical backdrops, this might not be your cup of tea.

A sweeping, slow-burn historical drama full of espionage, fashion, and self-discovery - perfect for fans of epic novels who savor rich detail and complex characters, but not ideal for those craving a quick read or instant action.

From The Publisher:

Between youth and adulthood...

At age twelve, Sira Quiroga sweeps the atelier floors where her single mother works as a seamstress. At fourteen, she quietly begins her own apprenticeship. By her early twenties she has learned the ropes of the business and is engaged to a modest government clerk. But everything changes when two charismatic men burst unexpectedly into her neatly mapped-out life: an attractive salesman and the father she never knew.

Between war and peace...

With the Spanish Civil War brewing in Madrid, Sira leaves her mother and her fiancé, impetuously following her handsome lover to Morocco. However, she soon finds herself abandoned, penniless, and heartbroken in an exotic land. Among the odd collection of European expatriates trapped there by the worsening political situation back on the Continent, Sira reinvents herself by turning to the one skill that can save her: her gift for creating beautiful clothes.

Between love and duty...

As England, Germany, and the other great powers launch into the dire conflict of World War II, Sira is persuaded to return to Madrid, where she takes on a new identity to embark upon the most dangerous undertaking of her career. As the preeminent couturier for an eager clientele of Nazi officers' wives, Sira becomes embroiled in the half-lit world of espionage and political conspiracy rife with love, intrigue, and betrayal.
