The ship was trapped for months before it was ultimately crushed by ice in 1915, leaving the crew stranded on ice floes.
Shackleton's crew survived on limited supplies and had to ration food while living on the ice for over a year.
In April 1916, after more than a year trapped, Shackleton and five crew members set off in lifeboats to seek help.
They sailed over 800 miles across dangerous seas to reach South Georgia Island, facing extreme weather conditions.
Shackleton managed to rescue all of his crew from Elephant Island after their grueling journey.
The expedition became famous not for its intended goal, but for the remarkable survival of the crew against all odds.
Lansing's book was published in 1959 and is considered the definitive account of the Endurance expedition, using diaries and survivor interviews.
Shackleton's leadership and determination are often highlighted as key factors in the survival of his crew.

From The Publisher:

Experience one of the greatest adventure stories of the modern age: The harrowing tale of British explorer Ernest Shackleton's 1914 attempt to reach the South Pole.

In August 1914, polar explorer Ernest Shackleton boarded the Endurance and set sail for Antarctica, where he planned to cross the last uncharted continent on foot. In January 1915, after battling its way through a thousand miles of pack ice and only a day's sail short of its destination, the Endurance became locked in an island of ice. Thus began the legendary ordeal of Shackleton and his crew of twenty-seven men. When their ship was finally crushed between two ice floes, they attempted a near-impossible journey over 850 miles of the South Atlantic's heaviest seas to the closest outpost of civilization.

In Endurance, the definitive account of Ernest Shackleton's fateful trip, Alfred Lansing brilliantly narrates the harrowing and miraculous voyage that has defined heroism for the modern age.

I nearly rated this book 5 stars. The fact that I listened to its entirety in two days has more to do with circumstance than merit, but this book does deserve it.

Men seem created with harrowing adventure deep-set in their chests, and I am no exception. The fact that this is a true story is certainly elevating. It is also well-told with many excerpts from the logs/diaries.

Although gripping, I was not quite as intrigued or immersed as I have been by other authors of similar adventures. Thus, I decided not to rate it as highly as I have others, but even now, I am wrestling to keep my self-promise and resist a 5 star rating. Unfortunately, promises must be kept, and the fact that this is a retelling of true events does not excuse my feeling that I was slightly less drawn-in when compared to other tales.

That being said, I

highly recommend anyone read this. It reminded me in many instances of the reasons others love Master and Commander. Many of the same elements of male brotherhood and perseverance are here, but in my opinion, they are far superior in this case. If you are one to enjoy ships, adventures, survival, or strong men and their relationships, listen to this book.

What an INSANE journey that these 22 men undertook! Non fiction book that reads like a fiction book, gripping adventure and turmoil throughout life's hardships when trying to survive in undesirable conditions.
