I'm in love with this book! So much better than the last one (Ocean's Light did not sit well with me)!

Memory and Alexei are so good together.

A little too insta-love for me. I know that's the thing with mating - once it happens, it happens. And these two do have to overcome obstacles, which is important because it provides the tension that makes a romance worth reading about.

A word about these characters and what they go through. Sometimes I don't think we really appreciate, or maybe the authors (Nalini Singh is not as guilty of this as others) don't appreciate how hard it is to overcome trauma. Being a "strong female character" doesn't mean you just recover after a little while after being rescued from years of imprisonment. I really think this is a problem in the urban fantasy universe.

TRIGGER/SPOILER WARNING:

A lot of readers were very upset when Mercy Thompson, of Patricia Briggs' novels, was raped. They were upset because they didn't want something that violent on the page. But the fact is a lot of what these heroines go through is just as traumatizing as rape (I am NOT disregarding the violation and violence of rape). You don't just bounce back from the type of shit these characters go through. And love is not enough, it just is not, to heal you. It isn't a very trauma-informed community.

END TRIGGER/SPOILER
