Five. Wholehearted. Stars. I have been an avid reader of Irby's blog, bitchesgottaeat, for years. I have laughed at an inappropriate volume at work while reading her posts. I don't know why it took me so long to pick up her book.
The scathing honesty and foulmouthed hilarity found on her blog is here, but she goes deeper as well. Irby talks about her childhood, a scary and dangerous time when she became responsible for her mother's health while still a child. These essays temper her funnier ones and also lend them an air of gravitas; this woman isn't speaking from a place of privilege.
I also love the way she plays with form. Some of these essays are very traditional, and others are more like lists. At times Irby seems to be meandering without a point, but she always has one, and sometimes surprises you with it. And when she's funny, she is so so funny.
