Who Would Like This Book:

If you think westerns are all about stoic heroes and happy endings, get ready for a serious curveball. Doctorow’s debut flips the familiar genre on its head: it’s raw, atmospheric, and deeply human, with characters who are complicated and painfully real. If you love dark, character-driven stories that meditate on good, evil, and everything messy in between - or if you’re drawn to literary fiction that reimagines classic tropes - this will grab you from the first explosive chapter.

Who May Not Like This Book:

If you’re squeamish about violence or looking for a traditional western with a clear-cut hero, this one will be tough going. The brutality is front and center, especially early on, and the mood stays pretty grim throughout. Some readers struggled with the unrelenting bleakness, the lack of conventional redemption, and characters that are more flawed than likable. If you prefer lighthearted adventure or tidy moral lessons, you might want to skip this ride.

A gripping, unvarnished western that subverts genre expectations and digs deep into the darker sides of the frontier. Perfect for fans of gritty, thought-provoking fiction, but definitely not your feel-good cowboy tale.

From The Publisher:

Here is E. L. Doctorow's debut novel, a searing allegory of frontier life that sets the stage for his subsequent classics.

Hard Times is the name of a town in the barren hills of the Dakota Territory. To this town there comes one day one of the reckless sociopaths who wander the West to kill and rape and pillage. By the time he is through and has ridden off, Hard Times is a smoking ruin. The de facto mayor, Blue, takes in two survivors of the carnage-a boy, Jimmy, and a prostitute, Molly, who has suffered unspeakably-and makes them his provisional family. Blue begins to rebuild Hard Times, welcoming new settlers, while Molly waits with vengeance in her heart for the return of the outlaw.
