Who Would Like This Book:

If you love classic literature rich with drama, flawed yet fascinating characters, and a hefty dose of fate-versus-free will, this book is a must-read. Hardy’s storytelling is suspenseful from page one, throwing readers straight into a jaw-dropping situation and then exploring the aftermath with psychological depth. The writing is gorgeous and vivid, especially Hardy’s architectural scene-setting and his ability to bring rural England to life. Fans of character-driven stories, tales of redemption, and novels with a tragic but human touch will find plenty to savor here. If you enjoyed Les Misérables or Greek tragedies, you'll feel right at home in Casterbridge.

Who May Not Like This Book:

If you’re looking for a light, cheerful read or a story with a tidy happy ending, this probably isn’t your cup of tea. Some find Hardy’s prose dense or his parade of misfortunes a little overwhelming. The pacing can lean melodramatic, and a few plot twists stretch belief. Readers who prefer uplifting resolutions or more action-oriented narratives might find themselves frustrated by Henchard’s self-destructive decisions and the novel’s relentless focus on personal tragedy.

A heartbreakingly human, beautifully written classic about pride, fate, and regret - tragic, memorable, and worth reading if you enjoy deep character studies and rich storytelling.

I'm still after about 2 years after I read this novel the first time, agreeing what I wrote then. I realized I've missed to read his works as I haven't picked up one in quite some time.

I thought I've already read this and didn't like it but on closer inspection I hadn't, so I decided to give it ago. To my surprise I actually quite enjoyed the book, maybe not most exciting book ever read but it's well written and well crafted. Thomas Hardy is one of those writers that make art with words, while his books is usually a bit depressing it's very entertaining to read them. Need to read much more of Thomas Hardy, I'm just barley started!
