From The Publisher:
In her stunning 200th novel, #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts proves why no one is better "when it comes to flawlessly fusing high-stakes suspense with red-hot romance" (Booklist, starred review).
Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient Elizabeth Fitch finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange man's seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive.
Twelve years later, the woman now known as Abigail Lowery lives alone on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance security systems designer, her own protection is supplemented by a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing. Unfortunately, that seems to be the quickest way to get attention in a tiny southern town.
The mystery of Abigail Lowery and her sharp mind, secretive nature and unromantic viewpoint intrigues local police chief Brooks Gleason, on both a personal and professional level. And while he suspects that Abigail needs protection from something, Gleason is accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, not the powerful and dangerous men who are about to have him in their sights.
And Abigail Lowery, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both.

Holy shit, I love this book.
Have you ever finished a book, and then wanted to start it back over immediately, because you simply can't bear to be parted from this story yet? That is exactly my love for this book. I just don't want to leave.
Nothing else needs to be said really.
I'm a huge fan of Nora Roberts. Really, she is my number one for romantic suspense and definitely one of my favorite writers ever. Well, I admit that some of her books are not as good as the others, but still, most of them are great fun. To me, she is the queen of stand-alone romantic suspense, and
The Witness is one of the best examples.
What makes stories from Nora Roberts so unique are the characters. They are always interesting, different, and so real. It is impossible not to like them. Her heroines are clever and independent, and her heroes are not some dumbass alpha males. Abigail and Brooks are here to prove it. Abigail is not just some damsel in distress; she is strong and clever. I actually liked that Abigail is some kind of a genius; it makes her more memorable. And Brooks is cute without losing his masculinity. It's good that he seems to be so 'normal' and doesn't have any trauma from the past or something. It would be too much.
I have also enjoyed the plot. Sixteen-year-old Abigail, who goes by Elizabeth or Liz back then, witnesses a murder committed by the Russian mafia. She goes under witness protection, but she is betrayed by the ones who should defend her, and she runs away. In modern times, she hides in a small town in Ozark where she meets Brooks, who is fascinated by her. I enjoyed both parts of the story. In my opinion, the first part, which is, by the way, a well-written and interesting story on its own, is necessary to fully understand Abigail and her choices. It makes her a much more complicated heroine. I also enjoyed the additional criminal case connected with the local businessman.
But above all, it is all about the love between Abigail and Brooks. It takes only three months to build their relationship, but it's fully developed and believable.
This book has everything I really like about Nora Roberts.
