Who Would Like This Book:
If you've ever wondered what a queer, trans retelling of Peter Pan could look like, this is the book for you. Austin Chant brilliantly imagines Wendy Darling as Peter Pan - a trans boy - returning to Neverland after years of trying to live up to his family’s expectations. The story is perfect for anyone who loves thoughtful character studies, fairy tale retellings, or is seeking sensitive and nuanced trans representation. Fans of enemies-to-lovers romance, emotionally charged journeys of self-discovery, and the magical-but-haunting side of fantasy will find a lot to love here. It's both heart-wrenching and affirming, with standout writing and deep emotional resonance.
Who May Not Like This Book:
Some readers found the book's pacing abrupt at times, and the worldbuilding left them wanting more clarity about Neverland’s rules and side characters. If you’re looking for a tightly plotted adventure rather than an introspective story, or if you’re hoping for richly fleshed-out side characters and communities, you might feel a bit let down. Also, those unfamiliar with Peter Pan might find themselves a bit lost, as the book expects you to know the original story. The romance, while sweet for many, felt a bit forced or too conventional to others, and a few readers struggled with the transition from classic characters to more original interpretations.

I really enjoyed the queer take on Peter Pan. It's not strictly a retelling -- it's set after the action of the original story. It turns Neverland into an allegory for denial and self-alienation. I was ambivalent for the first half but got totally hooked from there on out.
