Who Would Like This Book:

Tamsyn Muir really shakes things up with this one! Nona the Ninth takes the Locked Tomb universe in a completely fresh direction, giving us a sweet, endearingly odd protagonist surrounded by chaos, found family, and six-legged dogs. The story has heart, humor, and lots of lore to ponder over - and if you love piecing together mysteries, obsessing over fan theories, and appreciating genre-defying sci-fi/fantasy, this is your jam. Fans of character-driven stories, found families, and complex worldbuilding will get a kick out of it.

Who May Not Like This Book:

Some readers found themselves lost in the sprawling plot and dense layers of secrets, especially if they hadn't recently brushed up on the previous books. The book's slow-burning slice-of-life start and abrupt swings into high-concept sci-fi can feel jarring, and the lack of concrete answers may frustrate those who want easy explanations or a neatly tied-up story. If you want linear, straightforward storytelling - this might not be for you.

Magical, mind-bending, and at times maddening - Nona the Ninth is a uniquely heartfelt and confusing cosmic puzzle. It's best enjoyed by fans already invested in the series who don't mind being left craving answers (and maybe a reread).

About:

Nona the Ninth is a complex and dark tale that follows the story of Nona, a young woman with no memories prior to six months earlier. Living in a city at war with her friends Pyrrha, Camilla, and Palamedes, Nona navigates her unique gifts while trying to understand her place in a world filled with secret plots and double-crossing. The book explores themes of love, family, and betrayal, as Nona's journey unfolds in a narrative style that shifts from slice-of-life to a potentially planet-ending threat.

The writing style of Nona the Ninth is described as a mix of wonder and power, reminiscent of Ancillary Justice in tone and obscureness. The plot is intricate and multi-layered, with elements of pulp horror SciFi blending seamlessly into a narrative that keeps readers on their toes, constantly questioning and seeking to understand the mysteries that unfold throughout the book.

IN THE DREAM, he told her the words about where he took his degrees, his postdoc, his research fellowship. They were his noise and not really for consumption. More like meditation; like even his mouth...

Her city is under siege.

The zombies are coming back.

And all Nona wants is a birthday party.

In many ways, Nona is like other people. She lives with her family, has a job at her local school, and loves walks on the beach and meeting new dogs. But Nona's not like other people. Six months ago she woke up in a stranger's body, and she's afraid she might have to give it back.

The whole city is falling to pieces. A monstrous blue sphere hangs on the horizon, ready to tear the planet apart. Blood of Eden forces have surrounded the last Cohort facility and wait for the Emperor Undying to come calling. Their leaders want Nona to be the weapon that will save them from the Nine Houses. Very good, though maybe a little less so than the previous ones in the series. Kept up the trend of being generally confusing the entire time.

Nona was much more enjoyable than Harrow but there was such little plot advancement in this book.
