Who Would Like This Book:
This book is a powerful, modern retelling of King Lear set on an Iowa farm, with the drama of inheritance, buried secrets, and shifting sibling loyalties at its heart. Jane Smiley’s writing is immersive, with raw, evocative descriptions of rural life and deep dives into complex family dynamics. It’s especially rewarding for readers who love character-driven stories, nuanced female perspectives, and literary adaptations with a new twist. If you like stories about families coming apart at the seams, enjoy rich atmosphere, or are curious about how old tales can echo in contemporary settings, this is a must-read.
Who May Not Like This Book:
Some readers found it too bleak or depressing, with almost every character struggling - or making choices that are hard to empathize with. If you prefer uplifting books, fast-pace plots, or dislike stories where most characters are flawed or unlikeable, this might not be your cup of tea. The detailed focus on farm life and the slow burn of the narrative can also seem tedious if you’re not interested in rural settings or introspective storytelling. Content warnings for difficult topics like abuse and family trauma apply.
