Who Would Like This Book:

If you're drawn to gripping historical fiction, particularly untold stories about women's roles in war, this one's a standout. "The Alice Network" shines a much-needed spotlight on a real-life, all-female network of spies in WWI France - think courage, wit, danger, and friendships that run deep. Kate Quinn expertly weaves two timelines, with unforgettable female leads whose emotional journeys are as compelling as the espionage. The character work and period details are immersive, and fans of works like "The Nightingale" or "Code Name Verity" will be hooked. If you’re after page-turning drama, fierce heroines, and a little truth mixed into your fiction, add this to your list.

Who May Not Like This Book:

Some readers found the dual timeline format a bit overused or slow to start, and if you're weary of WWII-era fiction, you might have a touch of genre fatigue here. Others felt the plot leaned a little too much into coincidence, melodrama, or romance, especially in the later chapters. A few weren't sold on the modernity of the younger protagonist’s voice and actions, finding her less believable for the era. If you prefer tightly edited novels with a laser focus on fact over fiction - or steer clear of books with heavy emotional or traumatic war themes - this might not be your cup of tea.

Unforgettable, fierce, and fast-paced - "The Alice Network" is must-read historical fiction for anyone who loves stories of resilience and women’s hidden bravery in wartime. Expect equal parts heartbreak, suspense, and hope.

In this enthralling novel from New York Times bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women-a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947-are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.

1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She's also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie's parents banish her to Europe to have her "little problem" taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.

1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she's recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she's trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the "Queen of Spies", who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy's nose.

Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn't heard in decades, and launches them both on a mission to find the truth...no matter where it leads.

"Both funny and heartbreaking, this epic journey of two courageous women is an unforgettable tale of little-known wartime glory and sacrifice. Quinn knocks it out of the park with this spectacular book!"-Stephanie Dray, New York Times bestselling author of America's First Daughter

SYNOPSIS:

In 1947, Charlie St. Clair, a young, single, pregnant woman, is searching for her cousin, Rose, who has been MIA for a few years. Rose was living in France during WWII, and Charlie is trying to find any leads to track her down. In her search, she befriends Eve Gardiner & her driver/accomplice named Finn.

In alternating chapters, we are told Eve’s story. In 1915, she was a spy in WWII, as she worked behind enemy lines in The Alice Network.

MY THOUGHTS

This was a fantastic historical fiction.

Although the main characters are fictitious, there are real people and circumstances throughout the book. For example, Louise de Bettignies aka Alice Dubois is in the book. I learned a lot about her, and she is the reason for the name, The Alice Network. She carried messages and intel, and she had a widespread intelligence network.

I liked all the main characters, as well as Alice. With that being said, I found Eve’s chapters way more interesting than present day.

The story is well-crafted, and I enjoyed the writing. The middle dragged a bit in the present-day chapters.

Solid, satisfying ending.

TL;DR: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Fascinating historical fiction about courageous women who served as spies in WWII.
