'Tesla: Man Out of Time' by Margaret Cheney is a biography that delves into the life of Nikola Tesla, the Serbian American electrical experimenter and inventor. The book covers Tesla's brilliant genius, his staggering array of inventions, and his contributions to the development of polyphase alternating current. Cheney's writing style is described as thorough and emotional, providing a detailed look into Tesla's achievements, ideas, and personal life. The biography also sheds light on Tesla's interactions with prominent figures like J.P. Morgan, George Westinghouse, and Thomas Edison, highlighting the controversies and innovations surrounding Tesla's work.

Writing/Prose:

The writing style is characterized by critical analysis and descriptions, which may lack a story-like engagement but is supported by creative elements in parts.

Plot/Storyline:

The narrative primarily chronicles Tesla's inventions and life milestones, although it may be difficult for readers to follow due to its organization.

Setting:

The setting spans Tesla's life from the late 19th century into the mid-20th century, reflecting the scientific and technological evolution of that time.

Pacing:

The pacing varies, with some sections moving quickly through Tesla's inventions while others slow down with technical explanations.
Promptly at eight o’clock a patrician figure in his thirties was shown to his regular table in the Palm Room of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Tall and slender, elegantly attired, he was the cynosure of a...

Notes:

Tesla was a brilliant inventor known for his contributions to modern technology, especially alternating current (AC).
Margaret Cheney's book, 'Tesla: Man Out of Time', offers a detailed and critical analysis of Tesla's life rather than a traditional narrative.
The book is organized by Tesla's inventions, but lacks clear timelines for when each invention was developed.
Some reviewers found the technical explanations confusing and suggested Cheney might not fully grasp the technical aspects of Tesla's work.
Tesla invented many technologies that laid the groundwork for future advancements, including robotics and missile science.
Despite his genius, Tesla struggled with mental health issues and eccentricities throughout his life.
Tesla had a turbulent relationship with financial stability, often ending up in debt due to generous financial decisions.
He was admired by prominent figures like Mark Twain and George Westinghouse, showing his influence beyond just science and technology.
The biography covers Tesla's early life in Croatia and his unique personality, including numerous phobias.
Cheney's writing has been described as both engaging and at times overly laudatory towards Tesla.
The book does not provide an extensive list of Tesla's patents, which could have added clarity to his numerous inventions.
Tesla's rivalry with Edison during the 'war of currents' is highlighted as a significant part of his legacy.
Tesla's inventions, like the AC motor, are still the universal standard used today.
In the 1980s, when the book was published, there was still limited recognition of Tesla compared to Edison.

From The Publisher:

In this "informative and delightful" (American Scientist) biography, Margaret Cheney explores the brilliant and prescient mind of Nikola Tesla, one of the twentieth century's greatest scientists and inventors.

In Tesla: Man Out of Time, Margaret Cheney explores the brilliant and prescient mind of one of the twentieth century's greatest scientists and inventors. Called a madman by his enemies, a genius by others, and an enigma by nearly everyone, Nikola Tesla was, without a doubt, a trailblazing inventor who created astonishing, sometimes world-transforming devices that were virtually without theoretical precedent. Tesla not only discovered the rotating magnetic field - the basis of most alternating-current machinery - but also introduced us to the fundamentals of robotics, computers, and missile science. Almost supernaturally gifted, unfailingly flamboyant and neurotic, Tesla was troubled by an array of compulsions and phobias and was fond of extravagant, visionary experimentations. He was also a popular man-about-town, admired by men as diverse as Mark Twain and George Westinghouse, and adored by scores of society beauties.

From Tesla's childhood in Yugoslavia to his death in New York in the 1940s, Cheney paints a compelling human portrait and chronicles a lifetime of discoveries that radically altered - and continue to alter - the world in which we live. Tesla: Man Out of Time is an in-depth look at the seminal accomplishments of a scientific wizard and a thoughtful examination of the obsessions and eccentricities of the man behind the science.

About the Author:
