Who Would Like This Book:
If you love steamy, modern retellings of Greek myths, "Neon Gods" is absolutely a treat. Katee Robert reimagines Hades and Persephone in a sexy, high-stakes world with lots of political intrigue, sizzling chemistry, and page-turning drama. The dual POV lets you get into both Hades' and Persephone's heads, and their dynamic is a beautiful blend of sweetness and spice. Perfect for fans of spicy romance with a strong plot, morally gray heroes, and heroines who know their worth. If you enjoyed books like "A Touch of Darkness," this one’s for you!
Who May Not Like This Book:
Not everyone will vibe with this one. Some readers found the world-building a bit shallow or confusing, wishing for more mythology and magic rather than a mafia-esque setting. If you prefer your Greek gods actually god-like (and not just powerful leaders by title), you might be disappointed. Others felt the book leaned more into erotic scenes than plot, or thought the BDSM/kink was overhyped and lighter than expected. If you're looking for a slow-burn or a darker, more twisted retelling, or you dislike heavy steam, this may not be your cup of tea.

I wanted to like this book. I did. I'd heard good things. It seemed like the premise was an amazing idea. But in the end I got half way through and had to DNF it.
Perhaps down the road I'll be able to try again. But right now my biggest complaint is the voices of Persephone and Hades are written way to similarly, several times I had to reorient myself to figure out who was speaking.
In addition to to that the internal monologues felt like they belong to broody teenagers.
All that being said I can see why this book appeals to some but just not me. This review is more a personal reminder if I try to pick it up and finish it down the road.
I did not realize that this was actually a Fifty Shades of Gray book disguised as a Hades and Persephone retelling. Dear God, I never would have read this if I knew that the similarities were going to be that strong. Seriously, just switch out the names Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele and you have Neon Gods. If you're a fan of that series, read this book. If you want something more in line with Hades and Persephone, I suggest looking elsewhere.
