'Beautiful Bastard' by Christina Lauren is a controversial read that sparks mixed opinions among readers. Some readers criticize it as being reminiscent of Twilight fan fiction, focusing heavily on explicit sex scenes and lacking character development. However, others praise it for its quick pace, engaging banter between the main characters, and the unique setting in Chicago. The story revolves around the tumultuous relationship between Bennett Ryan, a COO, and his assistant intern Chloe, as they navigate a love-hate dynamic that eventually turns into something more.

Characters:

Chloe is a determined and witty intern, while Bennett is an archetypal arrogant boss, both of whom exhibit a typical yet shallow enemies-to-lovers relationship.

Writing/Prose:

The authors utilize an accessible and engaging style, marked by humor and intense physicality, but sometimes at the expense of deeper narrative substance.

Plot/Storyline:

The narrative revolves around the heated and complicated dynamic between a driven intern and her demanding boss, heavily leaned on sexual encounters and familiar romantic tropes.

Setting:

The story is grounded in a corporate office setting, which serves as both a backdrop and a catalyst for the romantic and sexual tension.

Pacing:

The pacing is uneven, starting quickly but struggling with coherence in the storyline as it prioritizes frequent sexual encounters.
“Shit,” I mumbled to myself. I knew the moment I woke up this morning that my day was going to suck. Sitting in my car, I tried to peer around the huge SUV in front of me. What the hell is the problem...

Notes:

Beautiful Bastard started as a fan fiction for the Twilight series, originally titled The Office.
It was published by a traditional publisher rather than going through self-publishing or indie channels.
The book features typical romance plot elements, including a workplace affair and 'enemies to lovers' dynamic.
Chloe, the female lead, is depicted as a strong and witty character, while Bennett, her boss, is described as rude and arrogant yet charming.
The narrative includes many explicit sex scenes, often set in various locations like elevators and conference rooms.
There are mixed reviews, with some readers enjoying the steamy aspects while others criticize the lack of character development and depth in the plot.
The writing duo Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings (Christina Lauren) crafted the story to include humor alongside erotic content.
Some reviews point out pacing issues, typical of narratives derived from serialized fan fiction.
The series gained popularity rapidly, contributing to the trend of pulled-to-publish fan fiction becoming mainstream romance novels.

Sensitive Topics/Content Warnings

I'm so angry that I spent five minutes reading this book.

The main characters are a boss and intern who absolutely hate each other. Yet within the first chapter they screwed in a conference room and all of a sudden couldn't keep their hands off each other.

Next they did the deed in a lingerie store, a hallway, an elevator, a bathroom, a shower and finally a hotel room. And for three-quarters of the book, they still hated each other. They hardly ever had any sort of conversation while wearing clothes.

Yet somehow -through the magic of their banging - they decided to try to be a couple. How romantic!

And was it supposed to be sexy that he kept stealing her underwear? 'Cause I was not impressed!
