Who Would Like This Book:

Joe Abercrombie delivers a gripping, fast-paced adventure packed with twists, betrayals, and genuine character growth. Yarvi is an underdog you can’t help but root for - a prince with a disability who outwits his enemies using brains over brawn. With sharp dialogue, a gritty Norse-inspired world, and a cast of quirky companions, this is a fantastic pick for fans of character-driven fantasy, coming-of-age tales, and anyone who enjoys a fresh spin on classic tropes. Whether you’re a YA reader or an adult fantasy fan, there’s plenty to love.

Who May Not Like This Book:

Some readers found the plot a bit predictable, especially seasoned fantasy fans, and missed the darker, more complex tone of Abercrombie’s adult novels. The single-point-of-view storytelling and shorter length means the world building and secondary characters aren’t quite as richly developed as in his previous works. If you’re looking for epic magic, detailed battle sequences, or intense moral ambiguity, you might find this book a little lighter or more streamlined than expected.

A smart, fast, and surprisingly gritty YA fantasy - Half a King is underdog adventure at its best, balancing heart, darkness, and clever twists in a Viking-inspired world. Great for fans old and new!

Pacing:

A seeking wind, the Gettlanders called it, for it found out every chink and keyhole, moaning Mother Sea’s dead chill into every dwelling, no matter how high the fires were banked or how close the folk...

Praise for Half a King

"Tremendously entertaining . . . lightning-fast and filled with a wonderful collection of rogues, villains and two-faced bastards . . . From the first chapter [Joe Abercrombie] wastes no time as the reader is swept up in a gripping tale of betrayal and revenge."-SciFi Now

"Half a King is my favorite book by Joe Abercrombie so far, and that's saying something."-Patrick Rothfuss

"As in all Abercrombie's books, friends turn out to be enemies, enemies turn out to be friends; the line between good and evil is murky indeed; and nothing goes quite as we expect. With eye-popping plot twists and rollicking good action, Half a King is definitely a full adventure."-Rick Riordan

"Enthralling! An up-all-night read."-Robin Hobb

"Polished and sharp, perhaps his most technically proficient novel yet . . . I dare you to read the first chapter and try not to turn the next page."-Brent Weeks

"Half a King can be summed up in a single word: masterpiece. It's a coming-of-age story. It's a Viking saga. It's a revenge tale and family drama and the return of the prodigal son. But most of all, it's this: a short time alongside people as weak and blundering as we are and, in the midst of it all, as heroic. Far too short a time, as it turns out. What a wonderful book."-Myke Cole

"Half a King is full of all the adventure I've come to expect from Abercrombie and a tenderness I never knew he had."-Sam Sykes

The opening of the Shattered Sea trilogy cuts sharp and lean. Yarvi, son of a king, is betrayed and cast into a world that will not forgive weakness. Every choice, every step, carries the weight of survival and the specter of betrayal. Abercrombie balances grit and strategy, showing that a kingdom is not won by strength alone but by cleverness, courage, and patience.

Spoiler: <Yarvi’s early misfortunes shape him, teaching lessons in humility, loyalty, and the quiet, enduring art of cunning.>

Favorite Abercrombie I've read so far. You already know if you like Joe Abercrombie. This is him doing Joe Abercrombie. Bleak, funny, grimdark.

Fast paced and different to what I have been reading but I'm not sure it I want to read on to book 2 yet... Maybe have a break and decide. Wasn't a bad read though just not enough depth for my liking.

I had tried to listen to it before on audiobook but DNFd it as I didn't feel like it was the right media to consume it for me. I tried the audiobook again and while I still feel the same I finished it. I wasn't quite able to get as invested and focus as much as I wanted on the story. Might need to check if I can borrow the next books in my library

Wow.

Really, wow.

A friend rec'd this book to me, because she knows I love Game of Thrones. And it most certainly did not disappoint. I've read Abercrombie before - I enjoyed his First Law trilogy - but this just feels above and beyond anything else I've read of his. Really fantastic, twisty plotting. Definitely elevates him to my auto-buy list.

If you love epic fantasy with a dose of gritty realism, check this one out.

Half a King is the first Joe Abercrombie book I've read, and I'm unsure how to feel. The Blade Itself is without a doubt his most well-known novel, but when it came down to it, the synopsis for Half a King interested me far more. I don't know if my experience would've been much different, reading TBI first, but I can't imagine it would've changed by much.

Abercrombie's writing style is just as I'd expected—blunt, grim, and pulls no punches for the reader. That style can be a great strength, depending on the story told, and I can't decide whether this story was one of those contenders or not. It undeniably created a great atmosphere in the novel, but I also felt somewhat distanced from the characters; their pain, passion, and interactions all felt somewhat bland to me. I was left untouched by any of the impactful lines of this story, though there were many to choose.

One positive I have is that the plot twist at the end caught me entirely off guard. I didn't anticipate what happened at all, which is probably why the revelatory moment is the only one that provoked emotion in me: pleasant shock.

Based on how I enjoyed (or rather, got through) this book, I don't think Abercrombie is the author for me. Knowing that most of his writing will follow along these lines, it's probably better I leave off here and leave the reviews to those who have a higher chance of enjoyment.
