Who Would Like This Book:

If you love fairy tale retellings, A Curse So Dark and Lonely is definitely worth a spot on your TBR! Brigid Kemmerer reimagines Beauty and the Beast with a fresh twist, bringing together a fierce modern heroine with cerebral palsy, a kingdom in peril, and an emotionally complex prince. Vivid characters, strong friendships (hello, Team Grey!), and rich political intrigue make this more than just a romance - it’s about resilience, loyalty, and stepping up in the face of hardship. The blend of real-world and fantasy elements means readers who like character-driven stories, disability representation, and modern spins on classic tales will especially enjoy this one. High school readers and older teens will devour it, but fantasy lovers of all ages are in for a treat.

Who May Not Like This Book:

Some readers felt let down by aspects like slow pacing, a world that needed more development, or certain plot choices that stretched believability (the pretend princess storyline was especially divisive). It’s a long read, and if you’re looking for nonstop action, this might feel a bit slow at times. Others hoped for deeper world-building or wanted side characters and relationships (especially Grey!) to get more attention. There’s also some violence, so keep that in mind if you prefer lighter tales, and know ahead that this is just the first in a series - the ending leaves some big things unresolved.

A fresh, compelling Beauty and the Beast retelling with big heart. Come for the fierce heroine and loyal friends, stay for the epic feels and political drama. Not perfect, but a great entry point for modern fairy tale and fantasy fans - you’ll probably want the sequel on hand!

Fall in love, break the curse.

It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year over and over, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell for him. But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.

Nothing has ever been easy for Harper. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother barely holding their family together while constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, she learned to be tough enough to survive. But when she tries to save someone else on the streets of Washington, DC, she's instead somehow sucked into Rhen's cursed world.

Break the curse, save the kingdom.

A prince? A monster? A curse? Harper doesn't know where she is or what to believe. But as she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what's at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.

I’m sorry to say that

A Curse So Dark and Lonely is a big disappointment. I expected so much more from this story. I expected it to be dark and full of deceptions and intrigues and a moving love story. Well I didn’t found any of these.

I think that the first part is completely useless: 200+ pages in which the author introduces us to the characters and their way of thinking. Harper, the female MC, acts like a child while Rhen, the male MC, is still so mysterious and well it seems the classic victim who has completely lost hope. I mean, I totally get that, but come on, it’s a bit too much.

As the story continues, the two of them meets and the story gets better but well guys.. THIS IS A YA ROMANCE NOT A DARK FANTASY TALE (except from the slaughtering part of course).

I don’t say that this is not a good story, I say that I thought it was completely different

I liked this book. If you're looking for a spicy romance, this is not it, but the slow romance is sweet and the premise is interesting.

I like that a girl from our modern world realistically grapples with landing in a fairytale, and that she is a believable character.

Okay so this book could have been a masterpiece if not for the last 25% of it but I'm giving it four stars anyway because my heart fucking broke a million times reading this. It could have been because I was listening to Phoebe Bridgers's Waiting Room on repeat the entire time I read it (my 2025 spotify wrapped is going to be weird as hell) or because like, I just lowkey related to Rhen a lot (which I suppose makes sense because more than anyone I feel like he was the grown-up of the book-- nothing screams zillennial adulthood more than the immense pressure of responsibility and feeling like you've failed to live up on top of like, being overwhelmed by a crumbling world and your part in it) but this book just hit me hard in the seasonal depression in the best way.

Also beauty and the beast is my favorite fairytale so I am biased.

Overall a solid book with some solid characters. It took me a while to get through it, but the last hundred or so pages were fun to read. I like the characters, the vague Beauty and the Beast tie in, and the feel of the world.

No terribly new besides the MC and the CP representation, which was interesting to read. It also wasn't a dropped thread where it happens once and never again.

The ending was intriguing, I might want to read the sequel just because I like Grey enough, but ehhh if it turns into a love triangle, I won't be too impressed.

"A Curse So Dark and Lonely" is a retelling of a well-known and well-beloved fairytale; "Beauty and the Beast." But to say that this book is just a retelling would be an insult to the beautiful, colorful story that Kemmerer has woven. I bought this book for two reasons; trust in Kemmerer as an author, from reading some of her previous work, and because I knew it was a "Beauty and the Beast" retelling. I enjoyed this book, not because of those two things, but because the characters and story stood on their own; independent from the author's inspiration. I will recommend this book to anyone who asks for one, but I won't refer to it solely as a fairytale retelling. It is more than that.

I could write paragraphs and paragraphs about every character in this book, but for the sake of brevity, I will keep the gushing to a minimum. Harper, Rhen, and Grey have some of the best chemistry in a cast of characters I've ever seen; and each receives their own time for development and growth. I almost hesitate to include Grey in the main cast (as he has no POV chapters of his own, except at the very end) but he was such an integral part of the story that I had to. He's also just a great character in his own right and deserves the attention.

There was never a point where I was shocked by the plot, but it always entertained me. That isn't necessarily a bad thing either; not every book needs to be intensely suspenseful. This book focuses on its characters rather than its plot, which serves the story well as a whole.

When "A Heart So Fierce and Broken" hits the bookstore shelves, you can guarantee that I'll be there to buy it.
