Set in a world where humans are divided into three groups - Psy, Were, and human - "Slave to Sensation" follows the story of Sascha Duncan, a Psy living in fear of being exposed for having emotions in a society that suppresses feelings. When Lucas Hunter, a changeling, enters her life while hunting a changeling killer possibly linked to the Psy, their attraction becomes complicated by the dangers surrounding them. The book explores the evolving relationship between Sascha and Lucas amidst the backdrop of a world filled with psychics, shape-shifters, and political tensions, creating a unique blend of sci-fi and paranormal romance. The author, Nalini Singh, intricately weaves together a cleverly layered plot with exceptional world-building and vibrant characters that come alive off the page.

From The Publisher:
THE FIRST PSY/CHANGELING NOVEL from the New York Times bestselling author of Shards of Hope, Shield of Winter, and Heart of Obsidian…
The book that Christine Feehan called "a must-read for all of my fans."
In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of "rehabilitation"-the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was…Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a Changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy coexistence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several Changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovers that this ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion-and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities-or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation…

Initial Review (11/2009):
Yz introduced me to the series. I have to say that I loved the book. I will most definitely be reading the other books in the series.
The Psy/Changeling world we are introduced to is new and interesting. I love finding a series that's similar, but different enough to be new. The world has split into three "species" - Psy (who feel no emotion and are ruled by logic), Changelings (who are shifters of different types - wolf, cat, etc) and Humans (who aren't shown in this book). One scared Psy feels she's on the brink of death because, despite all, she feels.
The romance and connection between Sascha (Psy) and Lucus (100% Changeling Alpha) is hot from the word GO. Again, one of my favorite aspects of shifter books is the close-knit family bonds and the DarkRiver family has that in spades.
The story also had some suspense and even a hunt to find a serial killer, making it all the more interesting.
This book, and several others I've recently read, remind me that in addition to jumping on reading the new releases I should also pick a book from my massive TBR stack that's slightly older because it just might be as good or better than what's out now.
Re-Read Review (1/2012):
I listened the audiobook for this re-read and really enjoyed it. The narrator, Angela Dawe, did a great job with all the different characters' voices; the Psy especially, making them sound devoid of feeling. And, the changelings ... hubba hubba. The story was just as hot and complex as it was when I read the book over two years ago.
I am really enjoying listening to the books and look forward to starting book 2, [b:Visions of Heat|215643|Visions of Heat (Psy-Changeling #2)|Nalini Singh|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388450756l/215643._SY75_.jpg|208772] next. It continues to amaze me how Nalini is able to keep track of all the minute things happening in this amazing world. She does a wonderful job of continuing the thread of not only the things happening within each of the changeling packs, but also the political sides of the story that are just as intriguing.
Wow! I mean, seriously, wow. I sat down this afternoon and read this whole thing in one big
gulp. It was fabulous. My only regret is that it took me so damn long to pick this one up off my TBR shelf. What's not to like? I can't think of a single damn thing. What a fabulous introduction to this world.
