There is a medium level of romance in Fortune's Pawn, which includes a subplot involving Devi and Rupert, although it doesn't overpower the main action.
From The Publisher:
A promising young mercenary's future gets thrown into jeopardy after a fateful encounter with an alien in the start to a propulsive space opera series perfect for fans of Firefly and Killjoys.
"Devi is hands-down one of the best sci-fi heroines I've read in a long time." RT Book Reviews
Devi Morris isn't your average mercenary. She has plans. Big ones. And a ton of ambition. It's a combination that's going to get her killed one day - but not just yet.
That is, until she just gets a job on a tiny trade ship with a nasty reputation for surprises. The Glorious Fool isn't misnamed: it likes to get into trouble, so much so that one year of security work under its captain is equal to five years everywhere else. With odds like that, Devi knows she's found the perfect way to get the jump on the next part of her Plan. But the Fool doesn't give up its secrets without a fight, and one year on this ship might be more than even Devi can handle.

This is a tough one to review.
I loved it - I didn't put it down at all yesterday - but at the same time I'm angry.
Because the only character I like is Devi now. Fuck Caldswell. I don't care what he's doing. Nothing can justify what he's done. And fuck Rupert.
He doesn't get to say he loves her. Love doesn't cage someone, erase parts of them without their will, make them less than they are.
And that's hard, because it seems likely that he's the hero, and I despise him and what he's done.
I'm reading onward, because I can't put it down, but I'm worried, because nothing - literally nothing - will make me like Caldswell. So if Devi is eventually won over to be on his team, I will shitcan this series so fast it will leave an impact crater on the bottom of my trash can. I can't and won't follow a heroine that chooses to go along with an ego-maniacal, abusive manipulator. I don't care what he's doing, his actions put him on the side of evil.
This was my first foray into the science-fiction genre and I LOVED it! The prose is excellent, Devi is an awesome character who totally kicks ass, and it eased its way into the more sci-fi elements so it wasn't a shock to my system.
Edit: 2019 re-read was just as good as before.
I love the premise.
I hate every character. I think the audiobook narrator is part of that.
