The only reason I enjoyed these books at all was because Kip is such a likable character. Fantasy tropes, passable writing, but a very solid main character.
“The Blinding Knife” is the second book in the Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks, a New York Times best-selling author of the Night Angel trilogy. The book continues the story of Gavin Guile, the Prism, who can split light into seven colors and use each color as a form of magic. Gavin is dying, his powers are fading, and he faces enemies on all sides: a rebellious son, a scorned ex-fiancée, a ruthless king, and an army of color wights led by the reborn gods. The only hope for the Seven Satrapies may lie in his long-lost brother, whom he imprisoned 16 years ago.
“The Blinding Knife” is a thrilling and captivating fantasy adventure that will keep you hooked from start to finish. The audiobook is narrated by Simon Vance, a veteran voice actor who has won multiple awards for his work. Vance does an excellent job of bringing the characters and the world to life, using different accents, tones, and emotions to convey their personalities and motivations. He also adds a touch of music to enhance the mood and atmosphere of the story.
The book is well-written, with a fast-paced plot, complex magic system, and rich world-building. Weeks has a knack for creating engaging and realistic characters, who have flaws, strengths, and secrets. He also explores themes such as identity, loyalty, faith, and power, and how they affect the choices and actions of the characters. The book has plenty of twists and turns, surprises and revelations, humor and heartbreak, that will keep you guessing and invested in the outcome.
“The Blinding Knife” is a wonderful work of high fantasy with engaging characters facing the perfect antagonists, set in a creatively wrought and increasingly chaotic world brimful of imaginative magic and interesting politics. Weeks holds fast to the traditions of his genre while adding a compelling new flavor.
2.5 stars.
