Who Would Like This Book:
Looking for a twisty whodunnit with a kick-butt heroine, a dash of romance, and an unexpectedly fun futuristic setting? "Naked in Death" launches the long-running In Death series with a bang! Lieutenant Eve Dallas is a tough, complex cop facing down political intrigue, serial murder, and her own dark past. Add in the enigmatic billionaire Roarke (swoon, anyone?), and you have a police procedural that hits hard both emotionally and intellectually. If you love mystery with genuine character depth and a spicy side of romance - especially if you want to dive into a binge-worthy series - this one’s for you.
Who May Not Like This Book:
If you’re a purist about sci-fi worldbuilding or crave a super-gritty, realistic police thriller, you might find the futuristic aspects a bit light or the occasional police-procedural tropes predictable. Not everyone vibes with the insta-chemistry between Eve and Roarke - their romance is fast and sometimes a bit old-school in its dynamics. Some readers also felt uncomfortable with certain graphic scenes or didn’t love the head-hopping point of view shifts. And if you dislike violence, darker themes, or don’t want romance mixed with your mysteries, this might not be your speed.

Loved it. Not as steamy as the books I normally read but good murder/mystery.
Pretty sure I read this before. Either way it was still very good.
I’ve read a lot of Nora Roberts novel. This is not that. While I didn’t mind the book so much, I have a hard time getting out of the details - you’re in a futuristic setting, learning all of the new gadgets and procedures. So it takes away a bit. There also doesn’t see to be a lot of character development.
I’m not too sure what the 10K other books are about, other than that the next in the series stars the same couple, but I’m not interested enough to read on.
I didn't think I'd like it, but this near-future, cop mystery, romance was exceptionally good. I'll definitely read more.
I’ve never read a book from the romantic suspense genre but this book is a great way to get introduced to this genre.
When we are first introduced to Eve, she is having nightmares from a recent altercation which resulted in her killing a man. While she is waiting for tested so she can report back to duty, her boss overrides the testing since she is needed to solve the grisly murder of a prominent senator’s granddaughter who was working as a licensed companion or what we currently call a prostitute.
As the novel progresses Eve has to work hard to discover who the murderer is before he kills again as well as stave off the deceased woman’s her angry grandfather. In addition to the murder case, Eve also has to contend with the strong sexual tension between her and one of the murder suspects Irish billionaire Roarke.
Considering that this is the first novel in the “In Death” series and the first novel I’ve read by J.D. Robb, I was immediately drawn in by the author’s writing style and the realistic dialogue. I enjoyed seeing the development of the relationship between Eve and Roarke as well as the development of Eve’s personality from guarded and protective to open and inviting. This was an entertaining read and I’m sure I’ll definitely be reading more books for the “In Death” series in the future.
My 'series-ongoing' shelf name has never been more accurate ...
60 books?! I put off this series strictly because of how late I was to the party. I felt like my TBR stack was already longer than multiple lifetimes, so why add a series with so many books and still going strong? Two mega fans [shout out to Cheryl (Ms Moondance) and Katharine] and many SOS friends pushed
hard to get me started on it. So, when it popped up again, I chose not to resist and dove in instead. I'm glad I did, though I'm not as in love as I'd thought I'd be. But, I do enjoy it and will continue on.
Just a lil niggle, I wish Robb had given Roarke a lilt or something. I keep forgetting he's Irish until it comes back up in conversation.
I didn't originally write a review for this book. I'm guessing that with the kind of non-ending, I just plowed ahead into the next book with no pause, and never doubled back to review. But after 29 books, and seeing Eve and Roarke settled into such a solid, amazing relationship, I was hungry to go back to the beginning and see them first meet and come together.
I daresay I liked it even better the second time, because I was shocked to see I only gave it 4 stars.
It's a good story, a good mystery, but for me the draw of this series is the characters. Eve and Roarke, most of all (of course), but the secondary cast is compelling. Even Summerset, eventually...but man did I loathe him in these first few books. What he says in this book about Roarke generally only being with women of impeccable breeding... Fuck off buddy. Summerset and Roarke are just as much gutter rats as Eve. So much for impeccable breeding, dickhead.
First time in my life that I reread something.
Especially a series. But this series... Oh this series deserves it. It deserves it all.
It is simply amazing! I adore these books!
Though set in the future, I liked it as crime detective novel.
This is one of my comfort reads. Some parts of this book I have really read many times. I find the story of Eve and Roarke so charming and I absolutely love all the characters in this series.
