Meet New Books

Sophie Perinot has enjoyed a decade-long career writing historical fiction. She’s authored solo novels—The Sister Queens and Médicis Daughter—centered on strong, royal women facing challenges that transcend any era. Additionally, she’s worked with fellow writers like Kate Quinn, Ben Kane, Eliza Knight, and Heather Webb to create collaborative historical novels about the French Revolution (Ribbons of Scarlet) and the destruction of Pompeii (A Day of Fire). Most recently Sophie took on a new incarnation: writing crime fiction as Evie Hawtrey. Even her mystery has history in it. And by Fire features mystery rooted in the 1666 Great Fire of London as well as a modern, London-set, storyline.

Sophie (or Evie—she genuinely answers to anything) splits her time between Washington DC, where she lives with her husband, and York, UK, where she enjoys living in history, lingering over teas, and knocking around in pubs.

This is literally one of the best books I've ever read. The story is powerful and the idea of using Death as the POV characters is as well executed as it was daring.

Read this as a young girl and remember it to this day. Haunting, breath-holding, beautifully written.

Loved this book. And not just because it's Tudor and set at the court of Henry VIII. My favorite aspect was the sister relationship between Mary and Anne Boleyn--yes the women are rivals but there is more between them as well.

I ADORED this novel by Moran. It sucked me into ancient world historical fiction and engaged me in a way I hadn't been before. The vivid depiction of Egypt more than 1300 years BC was astounding as well as historically accurate. And the sisters at the heart of the story humanize the very ancient past.

Publishers Weekly called Gortner’s novel, “A remarkably thoughtful interpretation of an unapologetically ruthless queen,” and I must say I quite agree.
